The fight for academic freedom now moves to the State Senate.

AB 715 is a dangerous bill that threatens free speech and curriculum in California classrooms. It passed an Assembly floor vote unanimously, despite overwhelming community opposition. It is now headed to the State Senate, where it will be heard in the Education and Judiciary Committees. 

The bill expands the definition of “nationality” to include perceived ancestry or religion tied to a country—like israel—opening the door to punishing educators who teach about Palestine, colonialism, or human rights by conflating criticism of israel with antisemitism.
